Johnson & Johnson To Pay $4B In Hip Implant Lawsuit

hip implantJohnson & Johnson is in the media again – this time it’s for defective hip implants. The company will pay more than $4 billion to settle more than 7,500 lawsuits. Thousands of people have already had their devices removed. De Puy, Johnson & Johnson’s orthopedics unit, recalled thousands of its metal ASR hip systems due to high failure rates. Those who went up against the company said the defective metal-on-metal devices caused pain, discomfort and increased levels of metal ions in their bloodstream.

De Puy’s product came onto the market in 2005 and the recall occurred in 2010. During that time, roughly 93,000 units were sold worldwide. Data showed that about 12 percent of the implants needed to be replaced after five years, even though they were developed to be more durable than traditional hip implants. At Friedman, Domiano & Smith we specialize in cases just like this. If you or someone you know has been affected by any type of implant, please call us and we’ll help you.   News, via Chicago Tribune.
