Truck Accidents On The Rise

Truck accidents on the rise

On October 9th, 2013 a Greyhound bus and tractor trailer collided on Interstate 80.  It was heading to Cleveland – one person was killed and dozens more were injured, NBC News reports. Unfortunately, truck accidents like this are on the rise. In 2011, nearly 3,800 people died in collisions with trucks and 88,000 more were injured. Many truck accidents are preventable.

While it’s unknown what caused the Greyhound/tractor trailer accident earlier today, many accidents involve truck drivers who are pushed to the limit when doing their job. Not many people know that truck drivers are compensated by miles driven, not by hours worked – which causes them to ignore safety measures, delay repairs to their vehicle, and drive in a tired state.

Here are some tips for avoiding an accident with a truck:

  • Realize that trucks maneuver differently than cars
  • Be aware if you might be in someone’s blind spot
  • Give trucks plenty of space when driving in wet conditions
  • Large vehicles require much longer distance to stop than cars; don’t cut them off
