The mother of a 15-year old girl who was shot in the head by her ex-boyfriend has filed a civil lawsuit against the 18 year-old boy and his grandparents, who owned the Texas property where the shooting took place. James Lee Saulters was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty in December to aggravated assault-dating violence. Saulters shot Kaci Grieger in the right side of the head with a .22 caliber pistol on December 22, 2011, following an argument they had in a pickup truck, while another couple sat in the truck with them.
In a miraculous fate, Grieger defied the doctors’ predictions in recovering from the wounds, but is now left with bullet fragments in her head and some soft spots where doctors need to periodically cut away from in order to relieve swelling in her brain. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the then 17-year old Saulters, in the way he handled the pistol and for shooting Grieger in the head.
Attorneys on behalf of the Greiger family stated that although it is a miracle that Grieger is alive, she will be suffering from her wounds for the rest of her life. The lawsuit also alleges that Saulters’ grandparents were negligent for failing to supervise the minors on their property and for allowing a minor to possess a handgun. One attorney on behalf of the Grieger family left the case with this statement: “When parents entrust their children to the supervision of other adults, they should be able to expect that their child will be kept out of harm’s way.”
