Craigslist killer receives death sentence

Richard Beasley, 53, now more formally known as the “Craigslist Killer,” has been sentenced to death this morning in Akron, Ohio.

Beasley was convicted for the murders of three men, all of whom were lured by bogus job offerings on Craigslist. The jury recommended Beasley face execution, although the judge had the option of reducing his sentence to life in prison.

Beasley was convicted of teaming up with a teenager in 2011 to catch Craigslist job seekers’ eyes with a promise of jobs on a southeast Ohio farm, only to lure them into robberies. Three men were killed and a fourth, who was wounded, testified at Beasley’s trial.

Brogan Rafferty, the teenager Beasley partnered with who was 16 years old at the time of the killings, was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

All three men who were killed were “looking for a fresh start in life,” which the prosecutors did not fail to repeat during the trial. Scott Davis, now 49, was the lone survivor of the crimes, who had been shot in the right arm but was able to escape into the woods and tip off police.

After two hours of witness testimonies, including one from Beasley’s tearful mother who claimed her son lived a trouble childhood, the jury still recommended execution.

Beasley’s crimes were considered to be the “worst of the worst” by prosecutors and jury on the case.
